PFO Meeting--Minutes

In an attempt to enlist as many participants as possible, today’s meetings were held at two separate times: 2:45 and 6:00 p.m.  Both groups addressed the same topics and the minutes reflect responses of both groups.

PFO Meeting--Minutes

September 18, 2003

The first meeting was called to order at 2:50 p.m. and the second meeting at 6:07 p.m.

Topics discussed:

Officers should be elected at the October meeting.  Nominations will be accepted for president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.

The best time to hold the PFO meetings was discussed.  Attendees agreed that the PFO should hold one regular meeting per month at one meeting time.  The idea of two meeting times seems counter-productive.  Most of the faculty find it more convenient to attend early meetings.  The 6:00 meeting time seems to interfere with dinner for many parents and faculty.  The first group suggested a 7:00 p.m. meeting time, but agreed that the second group should make the call.  The second group recommended that, as a compromise, the meetings take place at 6:30 p.m.

The annual Craft Fair will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2003, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Help is needed distributing flyers now (these can be picked up in the Ellis Tech main office), and assisting with the concession on the day of the event.  Crafter space is still available for $25 per table OR $35 per 5’ x 10’ space.  Contact Melody Guillemette by phone at 774-4947, through the PFO mailbox at Ellis, or through the website email address.   Each trade area will be asked to donate an item for the silent auction.

A bake sale and t-shirt sale are planned for the Freshman Parent Conference Night, October 1, 2003.  Parents of upperclassmen may be needed to help out.  Contact Melody at the above number.

Ideas for encouraging greater attendance at PFO meetings were discussed.  Special programs of interest to parents could be held in conjunction with some of the meetings.  A door prize will be offered at the October meeting for a lucky attendee.  Ice cream certificates will be offered to the students in the homeroom or shop with the greatest parent participation.  Meetings should be limited to one hour.  Mr. Bureau volunteered to call parents to enlist their participation.

The PFO Constitution may need to be revised.  Suggestions for revisions should be brought to the October meeting.

Ideas for special programs for parents were suggested.  Topics include: Drug Awareness, Depression and Teen Suicide, Parental Rights After a Child Reaches 16, Transition to Work, Gearing Up for CAPT, and The New Graduation Requirements.

Current fundraising planned for the 2003-2004 school year include: The Craft Fair (November 1, 2003), The Flea Market (March 6, 2004), The Antique Show (March 27, 2004), and Bake Sales and T-shirt Sales at the two Parents’ Nights and the Shop & Technology Fair.

New ideas for possible fundraisers include selling Dine Out Entertainment Books, Krispy Kreme Donuts, grinders for Super Bowl Sunday, and holding a Pancake Breakfast.

Website ideas include selling t-shirts and other Ellis Tech items on the website, and providing for Craft Fair applications to be downloaded from the site.
